Does Rick Santorum really think blacks want handouts of other people's money??

Rick Santorum does not want to make black people's lives better by giving them somebody else's money. After all that would be like Congress asking to use our money to make their lives better. Passing on a benefit reserved for the mega rich and politicians is just crazy talk.

Today CBS aired a YouTube response of Rick Santorum addressing his comments in the above YouTube Video, about giving poor blacks someone else's money. In the response, he claims he cannot recall the 'context' of his statement made less than a day before. Like his colleague Rick Perry, he seems to have 'forgotten' his key facts. However, he does remember to cite the movie Waiting for Superman, as the culprit for either his statement or opinion. (He fails to clarify which). Therefore, as a member of the social work profession, it is always in my job description to help those who struggle.

What GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum does not realize is 89% of food stamp/welfare recipients are white in Iowa versus 9% of blacks according both CBS News and Iowa Department of Human Services. For future reference, even though on average, Caucasians make up the majority of recipients of welfare/entitlement benefits than anyone blacks are disproportionately represented statistically, this in no way equates to African Americans making up the majority beneficiaries; even before the recession.

The majority of welfare recipients are non-black, adults who spend less than two years receiving benefits. But even given these facts, the total cost of all welfare to the poor is minute when compared to the costs of our interest payments on the national debt,  with wars, and tax breaks we all pay for major corporations to 'trickle down' employment which has yet to arrive for most Americans of any race. As a nation let's just all agree on this point.  Regardless of the demographics of the recipients, we all want to reduce the numbers through fair opportunities for self-sufficiency.

  1. Insightful article Lorraine... I agree with many of your points... but Rick Santorum should do his research before speaking then take the blame for what he said and do the "Herman Cain" and suspend his campaign. Really!

  2. They will never admit that this is really the truth. Instead they will continue to target groups they feel are outside of them and groups that they blame for societies ills.

  3. I think that is what frustrates me most. None of them will take accountability for their own words. Voters are expected to overlook key issues. Unfortunately for the process, voters have a tendency to do just that.
